WELCOME TO THE
NATIONAL LIBRARY OF ESTONIA!
The National Library of Estonia is the
custodian of our national memory and heritage, the centre of Estonian
literature and national bibliography, the most valuable information provider
for our legislative body and other constitutional institutions, it is
a centre of library and information sciences, a site for the continuing
education of librarians, a cultural centre.
The Library, through its complex activities,
plays an important role in the Estonian cultural life. Besides that the
library has developed better knowledge of its role in information society
and adapted its activities to the needs of the changing society.
Today, the Library‘s main goal is to develop
user-oriented library. Besides providing open access to its collection,
targeting the services, widening access to the collections, implementation
of services based on new information technology, and improving service
quality are considered equally important in developing library services.
The Library can act only in constant change,
concerning both collection development as well as developing the library
services, using new means of information exchange.
The National Library concentrates on developing information
environment inside and outside its organisation, focusing on every social
structure with information needs.
