Professional training of librarians has long traditions in Estonia. It was initiated in the 20s of the past century.

Today LIS specialists are educated by two Estonian institutions of higher education: at the Department of Information Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Tallinn Pedagogical University and at the Department of Librarianship and Information Science of Viljandi College of Culture.
