FIRST COLUMN

E-library is taking long steps - Janne Andresoo
The new strategy of the National Library for the recent years sets the goal of combining the functions of a traditional library and e-library. The search portal, which will be opened on the web at the beginning of the next year, will merge together all resources of the NLE. As a more extensive development activity, the creation of authorised access to both the search portal and the digital archive DIGAR, and the creation of a new website of the NLE focused on e-library and e-services are under way.

No need to take off your slippers while visiting the library or the best information portal as readers see it - Kai Idarand
In the first half of 2009 the National Library conducted a reader survey to find out what in readers’ opinion the e-library portal with an integrated search system should be like. The aim of the reader survey was to create the most user-friendly search environment, a fast, comfortable and information rich web solution. The competent specialists from the target groups of twenty one libraries answered the questionnaire that investigated their information search habits, preferences and wishes. The answers serve as a source of ideas for the creators of the portal and as a starting point in creating the information portal of the best design and search engine, developing e-services and authentication methods, organising feedback, etc.

Blogs in the public libraries of Rapla County - Maie Jakobson
Fourteen Rapla County public libraries have created their own blogs, as of October 2009, after having completed a few blog training sessions. When a library lacks finances and opportunities for creating its own website, it may be substituted by a blog. The article gives instructions how to start and maintain a blog. Also, the librarians of Rapla County share their thoughts about blogs and blogging.

DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY

New performance measurement methods and indicators - Anu Nuut
A new initiative focuses on a more extensive investigation of the digital environment. Statistical data on digital collections is being gathered and services and resources of digital library are being estimated. The article gives an overview of the COUNTER project on digital library measurement methods and performance indicators, which aims at developing metrics for web-based services and measuring websites and online usage statistics. The article provides performance indicators for public libraries.

The formation of a learning centre: the Tallinn School of Economics Library - Helle Sommer, Heli Priimets
The Tallinn School of Economics Library has gone through a long and complex development; however, it was only during the last decade that it has become a constituent part of academic process. The article gives an overview of the history of the 103 year-old school and library, the breakthrough in the development of the library when in the year 2000 a professional library head was appointed to its position, and of how it developed into an operative library in 2005-2009.

New additions to the family of qualified librarians - Reet Olevsoo
On 9 October 2009, the ELA Professional Qualification Committee granted the librarian qualification level III to sixty three librarians and the librarian qualification level IV to thirty librarians.

Cataloguing activity is the closest to my heart - Ene Riet’s interview with Kadri Thalström
Kadri Thalström has graduated from the University of Tartu majoring in English philology. After having settled in Sweden she studied library and information science at the University of Borås. From 1985 until now Kadri has been employed at the Library of the Swedish Parliament (Riksdagsbiblioteket). The interview dwells on her everyday work.

A review of the Transactions of the National Library of Estonia „Service quality – library performance indicator” (2009), the articles of which analyse the efficiency of library performance and service quality surveys carried out in Estonian research libraries and in Tartu and Tallinn universities in 2004-2006.

THE ESTONIAN LIBRARIANS’ ASSOCIATION

The opening of the Library Days and the quiz for librarians - Reet Olevsoo
A festive opening of the Library Days took place at the University of Tartu Library on 20 October. On the same day the librarians’ quiz was held. The winner of the quiz was the first Tartu City Library team composed of Piret Kiivit, Tiina Tarik and Kaja Klement.

Krista Lepik is again the winner of the contest „Information search from Internet 2009” - Krõõt Kaljusto-Munck
Those who had passed trough the preliminary round competed for the title of the best information searcher at the finals that took place in the Tartu City Library on 28 October. The competitors had to find answers to fifteen questions in two hours.

News from research and special libraries - Sirje Turta
The 2nd Research and Special Libraries Day took place in the University of Applied Sciences in Tallinn on 22 October. Presentations were delivered and the winners of the title ”Research and Special Libraries Deed of the Year” were announced. The Research Library Deed of the Year 2009 is the completion of the Estonian Subject Thesaurus. The Special Library Deed of the Year 2009 was granted to the network of thirty five special libraries of the University of Tartu.

Let’s start with a smile! Conference at the NLE - Ene Riet
The annual all-Estonian Library Days started at the National Library of Estonia on 20 October with a meeting where library performance quality issues were discussed. In addition, the presentation of the Transactions of the National Library of Estonia „Service quality – library performance indicator”, which was published in 2009, took place.

Libraries shape attitudes - Maire Killar, Priit Kasepalu
This year around the world the 200 anniversary of the inventor of the raised dots script for blind people, Frenchman Louis Braille, was marked. The series of Estonian events „Braille 200” included an exhibition that was opened in the Viljandi City Library, and a reader conference for visually impaired people.

A think tank at the manor: a seminar on digital cultural heritage - Toomas Schvak
An overview of the summer seminar of research libraries „Organising digital preservation of cultural heritage” held on 18-19 August 2009. In addition to libraries, there were also represented Estonian Public Broadcasting, archives, and museums.

LIBER 2009 - Mihkel Volt
An overview of the annual conference of the European Research Libraries „Innovation through collaboration” held in Toulouse, France, from 30 June to 3 July.

About the LIBER-EBLIDA seminar - Mihkel Reial
The 2nd LIBER-EBLIDA workshop on the digitisation of library material in Europe was held in The Hague from 19 to 21 October. Mihkel Reial, as a representative from ELNET Consortia, was selected to participate in the work of the seminar, as from this autumn ELNET is a member of EBLIDA.

Aleksander Sibul Grant 2009 - Kaie Holm
On 6 November 2009, the Tallinn Central Library gave the Aleksander Sibul Grant to Stiina Silla, a third-year Bachelor’s student from the Institute of Information Studies at the University of Tallinn. The Grant was handed over on the Profession’s Day dedicated to Aleksander Sibul. The theme of the event this time was „Safe Internet and protected personal data in libraries”.
