FIRST COLUMN

The Hidden Treasury of the Archival Library - Janika Kronberg
The goal of establishing the Archival Library of the Estonian Literary Museum that celebrates its centennial in the April of 2009 was to converge all written word in Estonian for research purposes. Legal deposit copies ensure the acquisition of currently published literature, but the auxiliary acquisition of earlier literature missing in the collection and receiving donations has been an ongoing operation. As for today, the Archival Library holds, for instance, memorial collections of fourteen writers, twelve scientists and five men of culture.

A CENTENNIAL OF THE ARCHIVAL LIBRARY OF THE ESTONIAN LITERARY MUSEUM

The Estonian National Archival Library Celebrates Its 100th Anniversary - Merike Kiipus
In the April of 2009 a hundred years will pass from establishing the Estonian national archival library, the present day Estonian Literary Museum. The collections of the Archival Library have been developed as a joint effort of Estonian people, mostly as a result of collecting actions. A number of desiderata lists have been compiled and distributed to people, printed matter has been selected at homes, institutions, libraries and archives both in Estonia as well as abroad. Abundance of material has been donated. The Legal Deposit Act that came into force 1997 in newly independent Estonia provides that an archival library is entitled to receive two free copies of every publication. In 2002 the library was officially recognised as an archival library, the decision valid up to the year 2011.

From the Baltica Literature Collection to the ELM Archival Library - Imbi Pelkonen
In 1909 the Estonian Students Society handed over its library of 10 000 books to the newly established Estonian National Museum. Approximately 2000 books of the donation were classified as the Baltica literature. The Estonian National Museum constantly acquires into its collections literature that matches its acquisition and research thematics. When after the year of 1945 the Estonian National Museum started to receive abundance of literature in Russian, published in Estonia, it seemed rational to establish an independent collection, a so-called Baltica II. As for 2008 the initial Baltica collection included 30 000 items and the Baltica II – 31 100 items; the periodicals collection includes 650 titles of publications. The article also describes the oldest books in the collection.

The Earliest Estonian Books in the Archival Library Collection - Heino Räim
During the earliest years of publishing printed material in Estonian, the period between 1525 and 1850, 1,245 publications came out. The article casts insight into the existance of those publications, important from the point of view of Estonian book history, in the collection of the ELM Achival Library. It should be mentioned that the Library holds 339 items of 413 publications listed in the Red Book of Estonian Publications (1525–1850). 86 of these, including 44 calendars, are unique copies.

The Digital Collection of the Archival Library in Grafo Environment - Helle Maaslieb
An overview of the digital library of the Archival Library of the Estonian Literary Museum that is located on the Web address http://www2.kirmus.ee/grafo/index.php

The electronic catalogue ESTER provides links to relevant full texts. Of their volume and number, calendars make up most of the digital library’s content and therefore characterised in the article.

RESEARCH LIBRARIES

Atlas Geographus… from Sir Isaac Newton’s Library - Sirje Lusmägi
The article provides an overview of two old books, seeming exceptional in the context of Baltic-Russian background, that belonged to the State Library of the Republic of Estonia before WW II. These are two first volumes of a five-volume geography book, Atlas Geographus: or, a compleat system of geography, ancient and modern..., printed in London in 1711–1717 (London, John Nutt et al, 1711). An armorial bookplate has been glued o n the inner side of the front cover. Researching its background, it turns out that the first owner of the book was one of the greatest scientists in the world history, an English astronomer, physicist and mathematician, Sir Isaac Newton.

DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

Plagiarism in Students’ Works: the Role and Liability of a Librarian - Kate-Riin Kont
Students’ more and more frequent attempts to submit the material gathered from the Internet without due acknowledgment as their own papers, essays and research works compels universities to focus more on the theft of creation and other forms of academic fraud that undermine the reliability of higher education. The increasing number of the phenomenon of plagiarism also troubles librarians, because especially they as developers of information literacy should explain to the students the elementary principles of information literacy, including how important it is to correctly provide reference to the outside retrieved information in scientific works.
