FIRST COLUMN

Competive also as a Provider of Online Services - Janne Andresoo
The users’ ever-growing need for digital information currently influences the development of research libraries the most; it involves archiving, maintaining and long-term preserving both digitally born as well as digitised publications. Libraries are proving themselves as competitive online service providers. Providing access to the databases via e-library gateway, the function currently supported by various interfaces, is the development priority of the National Library of Estonia.

THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF ESTONIA – 90

Users Will Soon Start to Favour the Search Possibilities of e-Library - Heli Kuusik, Sirje Nilbe, Külli Solo, Kristel Veimann
Developing electronic services has been a priority of the National Library. The present article mostly focuses on the generation and provision of secondary information. It also reviews the Library’s electronic catalogue ESTER that is being developed in cooperation with other member libraries of the Estonian Library Network Consortium (ELNET); the catalogue has been fully operational since 1998. The piece introduces the Web site of the National Library and a virtual library development project, “The Subject Gateway of the National Library”, launched in 2001. The gateway draws together systematized records of Internet pages in the fields of the humanities and social sciences, both free as well as paid databases and online publications. The authors describe bibliographic databases, generated by the Library, and unfold the scope of application of the national bibliography database, international databases and The European Library.

From the Darkness to the Daylight without Damaging the Original - Liina Enok, Krista Kiisa
Library as an institution is compelled to fulfil two antipodal tasks: to preserve and to provide access. In the 21st century, digitisation helps to provide access to the collection without damaging the originals. A carefully elaborated and properly accomplished digitisation and description of digital files enables to use the generated digital collection for decades. The article provides an overview of the essence of digital materials, explains the selection criteria for digitising the material in the National Library of Estonia’s collection and collections of digitally born materials, and characterises the most important archives.

Preservation of National Print Production - Mari Siiner
The National Library of Estonia’s collection preservation development plan up to 2010 founds the basis for organising the Library’s preservation activities. In addition to limited resources, the specialities of preservation are largely determined by the peculiarities, size and condition of the collections as well as their use, and by the availability of national printed matter. In the recent years microfilming and digitisation offer additional means for preserving originals in the Library’s collection. Unfortunately, reproduction does not solve all the problems related to the preservation of originals.

The Symbol of the Independent State and Unanimity of the Nation - Tiiu Valm
The new building of the National Library of Estonia was opened to the public in 1993. During the years of restoring the independent Republic of Estonia, the Library relatively swiftly became a symbol of the independent state and unanimity of the nation, and the Library’s building turned into the symbol, too. In the late 1990s the meaning of the Library as a locus also started to alter due to the development of information technology. Its building has been constantly renovated according to the new concepts of library and library services, taking into account the changing needs of library users, their mobility, provision of digital information and versatile development of library services.

How Traditions are Born - Triin Soone
The National Library of Estonia values traditions in its activities. Good traditions are born in cooperation with the men of culture and cultural institutions. The article provides an overview of artistic and literary events that form an integral part of modern Estonian cultural life: the exhibition of Estonian modern graphic art and concurrently awarded art prize, the Eduard Viiralt Prize; annual competition for selecting twenty-five most beautiful books and five most beautiful books for children that values the creative work of Estonian book designers and illustrators (at the opening of the competition’s exhibition the special prize for the best book design, The Golden Book, is awarded) etc.

A Successful Bookplate Competition - Õnne Mets
On the 8th of September 2008 the National Library of Estonia announced the call for entries to the first bookplate competition for children, My Book 2008. The submitted works impressed both in volume as well as for the level of performance. The jury selected the winner and ten outstanding bookplates in every age group – from the works of primary school, basic school and upper secondary school pupils – that were exhibited and published in the catalogue.

Lifelong Learning has a Key Role - Krista Talvi
Besides Tallinn University’s Department of Information Studies and Viljandi Culture Academy of the University of Tartu, the National Library of Estonia has been providing further training for librarians for decades already.

The Dictionary of Library Terms in the New Form - Siiri Lauk

RESEARCH LIBRARIES

Funding of Major Research Libraries in 2007: Revenue and Expenditure - Kate-Riin Kont
The economic pressure and the decision of the Government of the Republic of Estonia to reduce expenditure in the state budget in 2008 forces to seek means and possibilities how to rationalise the activities of research libraries. The present article aims to analyse the financing principles of research libraries that belong to Estonian public administration system and possible reasons why joint acquisition plan of research libraries as an agreement between libraries is not effective. Closer look is taken at the division of revenue and expenditure of four major research libraries – the National Library of Estonia, Tartu University Library, Library of the Tallinn University of Technology and the Academic Library of Tallinn University – in 2007.

EX LIBRIS

From Contamination and Incubation up to the Era of Digital Ex Libris - Hanno Lepik
Collecting bookplates in Estonia has not been thoroughly studied to this day. Rein Loodus, our most outstanding researcher of book culture, has written several concise articles about it, but no comprehensive study has not been published yet. The article provides an observation of the development of Estonian ex libris from the point of view of the collector of bookplates. The author divides the Estonian art of ex libris design into five periods of time.
