Openness and Innovation - Tiiu Valm
In December 2008 the National Library of Estonia celebrates its 90 th anniversary. Tiiu Valm, Director General of the Library from 1997 up to September 2008, holds that in the recent twenty years the National Library of Estonia has developed into an internationally acknowledged modern library organisation, first and foremost, characterised by openness and innovation.

The Thoughts of a Researcher - Toomas Karjahärm
Jubilee thoughts of a historian and researcher who has been the user of the National Library services since being an university student in the 1960s. He is of the opinion that the main resource of the National Library is its highly professional and always helpful staff members. Of information technological developments, he positively mentions the union catalogue of Estonian libraries ESTER and the Estonian national bibliography database ERB. He highlights among local digital full-text databases the Web-based DEA (Digitized Estonian Newspapers. A selection of newspaper articles from 1821 up to 1944) that enables to read the content of newspapers from image files online. The coordinator of generating the database is the National Library.

Five Recent Years as a Library User - Aili Norberg
In spite of difficulties, the Library has turned evermore its face to library users in the recent years. This is the opinion of a former employee of the National Library, who for a short time also fulfilled the role of the organise of user service, being the Director of Library Services. She highlights the level of technical and information technological advancement of library work that has enabled to promote the thoroughness and quickness of library services and the advancement of competence of the staff.

The Late Library - Piret Lotman
The National Library of Estonia as a state funded and acknowledged institution was established extremely late in the European cultural context – in 1988, when Estonia was on the verge of freeing from the Soviet occupation. However it did nor emerge on the empty space. Its predecessor is the State Library, founded on the 21st of December 1918, in which activities certain elements of a national library can be noticed already in the period between two world wars. Today the library faces both the problems that arise from the discontinuation of continuity as well as the problems that national libraries in the whole world have to deal with.

Everything has a Beginning. The Story of Erecting the New Building of the National Library of Estonia - Linda Pärnoja
An overview of the story of the new building of the National Library since the emergence of the need for erecting it in 1977 up to the start of construction works in 1985. The author happened into the turmoil of tasks related to the design work of the new building, when she held the position of the Head of the Mechanisation Department, established in 1977. The main task of the Department was to solve the issues related to designing the new library building and drawing up the spatial programme. To this end the work processes of departments were analysed, technological schemes were drawn up and the division of tasks specified.

Colleagues from the Past to the Future - Ene Riet
Just employed: Saale Ariane Kreegi, Krista Ott, Merike Harvo, Katrin Sõrmus; long-standing colleagues: Sirje Roogna, Mare Mauer, Ivi Kuldkepp, Tea-Vaike Sein, Hans Jürman.
The long-standing staff members remind of the past events and former colleagues on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Library. Young specialists describe their expectations related to their position in the Library.

The Collection of Services of Information - Margit Stamm, Anneli Kuiv
An overview of the history and present possibilities of the National Library’s Information Sciences Reading Room. The Reading Room is a structural unit of Library’s Research and Development Center. It is a constantly acquired collection and working environment with modern interior design and technical equipment for librarians, information specialists, university students and academicians for learning, continuous education and research.

Mission and Responsibility. An Interview with Tiiu Valm, Director General of the National Library of Estonia in 1997–2008 - Maire Liivamets
The interview focuses on the history and outstanding directors of the National Library and library specialists known to the Estonian library community who have worked there. Acquiring, preserving and providing access to national documents, digitisation and generation of digital collection, as well as ties between the National Library of Estonia and other European libraries and other libraries in the world are also touched upon.

Estonian Joint Thesaurus - Sirje Nilbe
If the project realises as scheduled, a new capacious thesaurus for all librarians, the Eesti märksõnastik (EMS; Estonian Thesaurus), will be published on the Web in the beginning of 2009. It will replace currently existing two universal thesauri of quite similar content, Eesti üldine märksõnastik (EÜM; Estonian universal Thesaurus), and Tartu University Library’s thesaurus INGRID.

New Library Standards - Endla Sandberg
In 2008 Estonian interlibrary lending principles were approved as a standard of the National Library of Estonia RRS 5:2008 Raamatukogudevaheline laenutus (RVL). Põhi­mõtted ja üldnõuded (Interlibrary lending (ILL). Principles and general requirements). This is a new guiding document that in the form of the standard of the National Library of Estonia presents principles and general requirements to be used while placing an order for documents and copies through ILL and fulfilling the ILL orders of other libraries.

An overview of the Rare Books Collection of the National Library of Estonia as a collection, its unique characteristics, development, and the present day and the future. The piece separately lists the sole known copies of Estonian publications available in the Rare Books Collection of the National Library of Estonia and the oldest documents in the Collection.

About Baltic German Music Heritage in the Sheet Music Collection of the National Library of Estonia - Heidi Heinmaa
The Sheet Music Collection of the National Library of Estonia includes among other materials rare sheet music, both of eccestiatical as well as of secular content, of cultural history value by Baltic German authors. The present article focuses on the Estonian-Baltic German artistic music heritage from the 19th century that has not been so far thoroughly researched in the Sheet Music Collection of the National Library of Estonia. Before describing sheet music publications, the author has provided a brief overview of the 19th century music culture of Baltic Germans as a necessary background information.

EX LIBRIS

Estonian Artistic Bookplates in the Art Collection of the National Library of Estonia - Katre Riisalu
Kristjan Raud (1865–1943) who made his brother Paul Raud an ex libris in pen drawing has been highlighted as the founder of Estonian national art of ex libris and then again Udo Ivask (1871–1922) who made the first bookplate to his father Jüri (Georg) Ivask in 1898 in Moscow has been regarded the founder. Sudden change in producing ex libris took place by the end of 1920s, when provision of more efficient national art education began. The year 1935 – the jubilee Year of the Estonian Book – gave a strong impulse. An ex libris collection was established at the National Library of Estonia in 1961. Up to the beginning of 1990s the National Library had close relations with bookplate artists and it can be claimed that the most productive and active period of Estonian art of exlibris is well-represented in the Library.

ESTONIAN LIBRARIANS’ ASSOCIATION

New Requirements Turned out to be Complicated - Krista Talvi
In 2007 the librarians professional standard was renewed and new procedures for attestation and awarding of professional qualifications were approved. Compared with the previous one, the above mentioned document more strictly specifies the requierements for the applicant’s education, lenght of employment and continuous and vocational training. In 2008 several applicants were not awarded professional qualifications, because they hadn’t followed the requirements set in the document.

School Librarians at Iisaku - Jaanus Kõuts
An overview of a three-day summer seminar for school libraries, held at Iisaku in the August of 2008. Lectures and workshops focused mostly on the cooperation with school administration, teachers, pupils and nearby libraries.

The Number of Adults Borrowing Childrens’ Literature Increases - Ülle Kuuse
An overview of the 5th Day for Childrens’ Librarians, held on the 17th of September in Paide. An overview of the activities of the committee and the results of the analysis of the work of childrens’ departments were provided.

Rafter Party at Mustamägi - Gerda Koidla
On the 1st of August 2008 – four months after placing the corner stone – the rafter party of the new library building of Tallinn University of Technology was held. The keys will be handed over to the Library in May 2009.

Janne Andresoo was Elected the Director General of the National Library of Estonia
Since the 16th of September 2008 Janne Andresoo is holding the position of the Director General of the National Library. Janne Andresoo was born on the 14th of August 1965. She came to work in the Acquisitions Department of the Nation Library of Estonia in 1994. Later she held the position of the Library’s Chief Bibliographer (1997–2004), Head of Research and Development Centre (2004–2008) and Head of Collection Development Department (2008). Janne Andresoo has acquired Master degree in information science and is currently taking her Doctoral studies in information sciences at Tallinn University.

In memoriam: Meelis Ideon (25 December 1941 – 22 September 2008)
A long-standing Acting Director, Director and Head of the Acquisitions Department of the Library of Tallinn University of Technology.
