DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

Some viewpoints of the philosophy of science - Kate-Riin Kont
Alain F. Chalmers in the introduction to his „What is this thing called science?“ mentions with some irony among several others `library science' and calls the researchers in this area, amateurs. The author of this article tries to argue that in library which is the main institution of library and information science, the work areas and specifics as well as methodologies and paradigms can be certainly called science.

Who lives that sees - Mati Muru
The author characterizes changes in librarianship since 1982. This year saw the publication of the so-called revelation book of information era, „Libraries and librarians in an age of electronics” by F. W. Lancaster where he envisions a future society without paper and states that libraries have to start re-evaluating their role and goals. The author, feeling responsibility for the new duties of the profession, is happy that the librarians of Estonia have acquired the new role, still keeping old traditions.

Applications of team work I - Merike Poljakov
The article to be published in several issues of the journal wants to offer support to Estonian libraries for organizing teamwork. In the modern changing library teamwork is a possibility for development. The author sees teamwork as an activity that promotes change. Good teamwork enhances the work environment in an organization and increases efficiency. There are no teamwork based organizations or those heavily applied partial teamwork in Estonia, and also schooling in teamwork is out of focus. The article primarily explains and analyzes the benefits and concrete applications of teamwork in the world.

Is library invisible in media - Inna Grünfeldt
The basis for mutual understanding between library and media is the perception of each other's interests and means of expression. The author of the article has worked in the library of the University of Tartu and in Virumaa Teataja – a newspaper of the Lääne-Viru county – and thus understands both sides and languages. According to the author library is not invisible in media – the feeling of silence and suppression is not caused by how many times libraries make headlines but what in the view of libraries would be worth publishing but remains unpublished. She thinks that developing an image of library in media is a task for library and not media, and suggests that librarians should think about the message they want to convey to people of any social standing. If a message to a broad audience has been put clearly it becomes easier to talk to and negotiate with the press.
