2006 nr. 6 EDITORIAL CONTENTS ARCHIVE

Dear colleague,

There has been no reason to complain about Estonian librarians’ lack of personal opinion and spirit since the last Editorial of the year 2003. The situation has turned better and better. The ending year can be considered revolutionary, especially from the aspect of public libraries. In addition to presenting libraries, who had moved into new premises or outstandingly modernised their work organisation, a number of problem analysis of how to choose a book, what to buy into public library collection, how to evaluate a book and is it worthy to promote it, if it is necessary and how to guide readers from public librarians Kaie Holm, Elle and Tiina Tarik, Irma Raatma and Cessy Seepter were published.

Writers had put librarians under pressure and there was nothing else left to do but to at first talk things clear between themselves. The journal Raamatukogu offered this opportunity in addition to the Estonian Librarians’ Association list.

Some readers have felt that research libraries and professional education have been recently represented in our journal less than before. In fact, this is not true, but the burning issues of public libraries provoke the mind and thereby happen to be more prominent. Burning issues do not displace general treatments by Esko Häkli, Piret Lotman, Andres Kollist, Martin Hallik, Mare-Nelli Ilus, Olga Einasto, and Sirje Virkus. The number of future visions should be, of course, replenished in the interests of our development.

We have provided information that all librarians need in Terminology and Nota Bene! rubrics and certainly is general treatments of reading problems in Richer By Reading rubric.

This year, it seems that Library has for the first time fulfilled its goal of intensifying the library movement – activated librarians and supported them in fending for themselves in our journal. We have together managed to produce a wide-ranging and concise yearly set of Raamatukogu.

I would like to thank all the authors, all editorial board members and all our readers.

A Happy New Year!
Ene Riet
