Statistics is like a magic wand that helps to find truth. In the interests of truth, I, too, wanted to learn whether the print production and library statistics and the results of the study on the consumption of culture in 2006 confirm a repeated statement of our young authors and journalists that readers do not enough read and libraries do not sufficiently buy Estonian fiction.

According to outcomes of the study on the consumption of culture, 84 percent of Estonian population has read at least one book during the last year, and slightly over a fifth has read modern Estonian prose. The same study also states that the most common reason for visiting a library is to borrow at home fiction, first and foremost, prose.

Hence, there is no reason to complain that people read too seldom.

Now, the other part of the statement about purchasing fiction to Estonian libraries’ collections. It can be figured that everything is in shipshape concerning major public libraries (assuming that public libraries are meant), because these are allocated more money due to the larger size of the permanent population in the region. And if everything has not been bought, local readers mostly have an opportunity to get necessary literature, for instance, from a nearby other library.

Rural libraries are in a more complicated situation. Here we cannot manage without statistical data. In 2005, 4,060 titles of books were published in Estonia. 365 titles of 1,051 books of fiction for children and adults were originals. During the period, slightly over 400 books were added to an average rural library’s collection. Considering that the growth of books of fiction for children and adults is decreasing every year, which outcome is that the addition of nonfiction and fiction is almost equal today, it can be soundly stated that rural libraries averagely purchase 200 (in a good case, a trifle more) titles of fiction in a year. Consequently, a rural library buys whether every forth work of fiction or, in case it purchases only original literature, a half of published works.

The choice is made by the librarian, who makes the decision whether to proceed from his/her own literary taste and better judgement, from the suggestions of community leaders, or from the requests of readers; whether to consider the price of the book or its cultural and literary historical value.

Do we need to worry?

In 2003, an extensive survey of reading behaviour was performed in Estonian schools. Within the framework of the survey, 3rd and 6th class pupils of schools of both Estonian as well as Russian language of instruction answered to the reading behaviour questionnaire by random sampling. Among other things, questions about favourite book, and what makes a book pleasant and what is a poor book that does not invite to read were posed. It turned out that if we want to offer children valuable reading, we beforehand have to make the book interesting and meeting his/her expectations. However, children’s interests, expectations and taste differ a lot that makes recommending books for reading difficult.
