Dear colleague;

“What on earth are they taught in the university,” I lately heard a cataloguer, who had held the job during life, sigh. She is dissatisfied with her young colleague’s faulty records, submitted to ESTER, that she constantly has to amend. Probably others have noticed too that several newly graduated librarians are hopelessly in a jam with their everyday work. Or unaware of the basic principles of librarianship, which (of our opinion) are elementary and should be provided by proper education.
We have all less or more thought about the education and further training of librarians, about knowledge and skills, necessary for a librarian today. Everyone of us has also its own vision and understanding of the priorities in library education.
In the current journal issue, Sirje Virkus and Mati Muru express their thoughts of the skills, needed by librarians today and in the future, and of relevant training. Which demands, based on which principles, should our professional standard include? What should form the basis of our professional education and further training?
It is impossible to acquire everything during the university studies, even if desired. Knowledge, necessary for library work, grows with every moment. Thus, there is a choice to make: either to provide profound working skills or to inspire interest in what is happening around us, develop the abilities of thinking, generalisation and absorption and the wish to advance without going into the details of library work.
The abundance and variety of information sources and means increasingly reshapes the traditional relationship between the teacher and the trainee, between the experienced worker and the novice. In the situation, where nobody can know everything, collectivity gains importance. Perhaps cooperation will be born from information exchange between generations, listening and learning from each other?
