Choices in Time and in Space - Janne Andresoo
Janne Andresoo is the Head of the National Library of Estonia’s Research and Development Centre and the President of the Estonian Librarians’ Association. She ponders upon the essence of librarianship and changes in it, upon the library as a place for books and its meaning for preserving national memory. Libraries’ task to make choices involves responsibility and is a complicated one in the context of national memory.
DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES
Music Library Services Provided by Estonian Public Libraries AD 2005 - Kaie Viigipuu, Meery Salu, Ene Roost
In the first half of 2005 a national survey “Music library services in Estonian public libraries in 2005” was carried out under the auspices of the Estonian Music Library Association / Estonian IAML Branch. The goal of the survey was to map the current situation and formulate the perspectives of music library collections and services. Eleven libraries, housing a music department or music listening room, etc., participated in the survey that focused on three target groups: users, music librarians, and libraries’ management.
The results of the survey cleared that Estonia still lacks common understanding about the essence and goals of activities of a public library’s music department. Copyright issues form the most acute problem. On the basis of the survey results, it can also be concluded that the development of music libraries is directly related to the development of modern libraries as an integrated system.
The Information Needs of the Students, Professors and Lecturers in the Library of the Estonian Business School - Eda Pihu
From October up to November of 2004 the Library of the Estonian Business School, a private university, performed its second survey of the information needs of students, professors and lecturers. (The first such survey was carried out in 2001.) 245 library users were inquired (223 students and 22 professors and lecturers). The respondents predominantly use the library for study and research purposes, and only 12 percent for leisure time activities. The availability of literature in 19 subject fields was asked to be evaluated – the availability of resources might be a decisive factor in providing for users’ satisfaction.
During the year several reasons for dissatisfaction have been eliminated. The greatest improvement has taken place in introducing databases and teaching information search. Since the autumn term of 2005 all the freshmen’s courses of the methods of learning and research include a compulsory two-hours practical course of information search in databases.
PUBLIC LIBRARIES
All Roads Lead to School - Marika Salu
Since 2003 Saue City Library is located in the same building with Saue Upper Secondary School, still remaining public library in its essence. The re-location of the library to school premises has improved the availability of library services for teachers and pupils. A study literature centre was established at former school library premises. The centre’s task is to provide necessary textbooks, workbooks and methodic materials for school personnel and pupils, and to ensure their maintenance.
Should We Integrate? - Vello Jõgisoo, Urmas Kruuse, Toomas Väinaste
The opinions of Kose rural municipality’s mayor of the library’s role within the rural municipality, of integrating public and school libraries, of the cooperation of a rural municipality’s institutions, including libraries. An integrated village and school library is operating in Kose rural municipality. According to the rural municipality’s mayor, the integration has justified itself.
The opinions of Elva city’s mayor Urmas Kruuse of the libraries’ role within the city, of integrating public and school libraries, of the cooperation of city institutions, including libraries. In 2004 the building of new city library premises were completed in Elva. The library is located in the same building with the first forms of the local school. The school also has its own library and integrating the city and school library is on the agenda.
The opinions of Vinni rural municipality’s mayor Toomas Väinaste of the libraries’ role within the city, of integrating public and school libraries, of the cooperation of city institutions, including libraries. Four libraries out of five in Vinni rural municipality, the second largest rural municipality in Lääne-Viru county, are located in new renovated premises with modern equipment. In 1995 two libraries of the rural municipality – Vinni and Pajusti libraries – were integrated and, instead of two small libraries, there is now one library with a well-developed collection.
