SUMMARY
40 YEARS OF INFORMATION SCIENCE AS A SPECIALITY
First Column: Information Science – A Speciality and A Field of Research - Elviine Uverskaja
Information science as a speciality is celebrating its 40th anniversary in the Department of Information Studies of Tallinn University (up to the beginning of 1990s, Tallinn Pedagogical University’s Chair of Librarianship and Bibliography). Tallinn University’s curricula are under constant change, but all the curricula changes have always focused on the teaching of basic skills of library work (bibliographic description, classification, collection development, information services and information search), too. New learning methods include projects, distant learning and electronic learning.
About Library and Information Science Education - Sirje Virkus
Changes in the society, alterations in working environment and new tasks in information establishments require new competencies from library and information workers and set higher demands for their educationers. Resulting from changes in information environment, there is a discussion going on in library and information science educational institutions in the following fields: curricula orientation, competencies, necessary for library and information workers, the contents and structure of the curricula for ensuring necessary competencies, teaching and evaluation methods, alternative educational methods, guaranteeing quality and internationalisation. The present piece gives a brief overview of the three first-mentioned aspects: curricula orientation, competencies of library and information workers, and the contents of the curricula.
The Department of Information Studies – From Yesterday Through the Present Day Towards Tomorrow - Aira Lepik
The present Tallinn University’s Department of Information Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences plans, organises and conducts the training of information professionals on all the levels of academic education, including Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral studies. The article provides a brief overview of what has been done and what has been planned in the fields of curricula development.
From Gutenberg’s Galaxy to Information Management in Digital Environment - Tiiu Reimo
An overview of research and development activities in the field of information science, librarianship and book studies in the Department of Information Studies of Tallinn University during forty years, beginning from the establishment of a special Chair in 1966 up to the present. Major research themes are paid a closer look. In the spring of 2004 an international committee, established by the Higher Education Accreditation Centre, evaluated the Department’s research results of the last five years. According to the evaluation, the Department’s forte lies in close cooperation in researching together with Estonian libraries and library organisations, which ensures that research themes are related to practical needs and developments within the speciality. The cooperation with European learning institutions also plays an important part.
Futher Training in the Field of Library and Information Work in the Information Work Learning Centre of Tallinn University in 1995–2005 - Veronika Rogalevitsh, Egle Krull
In 1995 an Information Work Learning Centre was established at Tallinn University for organising librarians further training and reskilling. In 1999 the Centre was restructured and its operating principles were changed – currently the Information Work Learning Center implements three programmes. The article provides a thorough overview of those three programmes – further training programme, research and development programme and distant learning programme. The training events of the current year have been separately focused.

Electronic Library’s Performance Indicators - Kristiina Puura, Anu Nuut
The evaluation methods for digital libraries is being devised. It includes infotechnological means, content industry and external communications facilities. The article gives an overview of the measurement activities of the North-American Association of Research Libraries (ARL) – about the research areas and conclusions to the surveys that have resulted in testing a number of performance indicators, which are described in the article.

An overview of the seminar of the ELA’s Old Book Committee for familiazing with the old book and manuscript collection of Hiiu Country Museum on 27–29 May. It was recognised that the island of Hiiumaa is in its isolation and openness a meaningful place in the history of Estonian thought and culture.
An Important Word – Reputation - Taie Saar
An overview of a summer seminar for rural librarians, held on 7–10 June on the island of Saaremaa. The discussion resulted in the conclusion that librarians have to learn to communicate with media for shaping their reputation. The reputation of rural libraries is also developed by its services. The latter can be divided into basic, support and additional services. The imposition of additional services (postal services, payment of pensions, etc.) upon libraries is a problem of small rural communes and peripheries.

The President of the Republic of Poland, Aleksander Kwasniewski, awarded more than twenty Estonians with Polish state orders and badges of honour on the 6th of July, on the last day of his official visit to Estonia. Among others , Tiiu Valm, the Director of the Estonian National Library,was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit.
On 21st of June, the General Staff of the Defence Forces awarded Tiiu Valm with the Cross of Merits.
In the middle of June , Tiiu Valmwas re-elected for the second term of office to the Governing Board of IFLA (The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions).
