A Memory Institution – Its Concept and Position in the Society - Anzori Barkalaya
The Rector of Viljandi Academy of Culture discusses the role of culture and the characteristics of a viable culture, as well as the cultural role of memory institutions. The author is of the opinion that the role of Estonian memory institutions lies in organising the promotion of the best practice and circulation on being an Estonian and on humanity in the Estonian cultural space.

I Am Making Sense of Our Professional Standard - Rutt Enok
An opinion of the Librarians’ Professional Standard, a reaction to Mati Muru’s article “Some Thoughts about Professional Standard”, published in the previous journal issue. Rutt Enok, Director of Harju County Library, a member of the recently liquidated Professional Council of Librarians that approved the professional standard under discussion, and the working group that drew up the standard, points out three principles that were considered in drawing up the standard. These are the following: 1) the standard sets classical minimum requirements for a librarian’s professional skills, 2) the requirements set in the standard are not position-related, 3) the profession standard is a tool for evaluating actual knowledge and skills of an employee.
The 21st Century Librarian Is an e-Librarian - Mai Põldaas
Quickly developing electronic world and the accompanying professional requirements for information workers determine the direction, where modern librarians are constantly bound to learn. It includes competence of computers and integrated information systems, know-how about using electronic information in user service and in professional communication, and English language skills, as majority of information is produced in English.

The Database of Pseudonyms Was Published on the Web - Merike Kiipus
The Bibliography Department of the Archival Library of the Estonian Literary Museum has already been involved in the work with pseudonyms for approximately eighty years. The card file of solved pseudonyms and anonyms has been constantly improved, the number of its entries already reaching 22,000 items. In the end of 2004, the generation of the database of pseudonyms began. The database can be accessed via the Internet (http://www2.kirmus.ee/biblioserver/isik/).
Collection of ‘Honorary’ Copies - Heino Räim
The accession list of the collection of newspaper and magazine issues, presenting authors’ fees for bookkeeping purposes, in the Archival Library of Estonian Literary Museum includes 76 entries, 74 of which have been published under special title.

Cooperation Between Tallinn and Helsinki - Gerda Koidla
A lenghty overview of the forty- years long cooperative relationship between the libraries of Tallinn University of Technology and Helsinki University of Technology. Supported by the Finnish partner, the library of Tallinn University of Technology – the Estonian Resource Library for Technology – became a full member of the International Association of Technological University Libraries (IATUL) in 1990 and took part in international cooperation project DEDICATE in 1998–1999. In spite of close cooperation, the libra-ries had not entered into bilateral cooperation agreement until the beginning of 2005, when they signed a five-years cooperation agreement.

International Standard of Terminology EVS-ISO 5127 - Sirje Nilbe
In autumn 2004 the Estonian Centre for Standardisation published an Estonian standard EVS-ISO 5127:2004, Informatsioon ja dokumentatsioon. Sõnastik, an Estonian translation of the corresponding international standard, Information and documentation : vocabulary. The Estonian terms are provided with English and French equivalents, drawn from the source standard, as well as Finnish terms from the standard SFS-ISO 5127.

Library Day at Viljandi
On 21 April 2005 an annual report meeting for librarians, this year treating library development issues, was held at Viljandi Academy of Culture. Morning session focused on research and development activities of the National Library of Estonia; on the other half of the day, issues related to professional training in Estonia and in Finland, as well as the history of Finnish libraries were treated.
