Borrowing items

Home lending is permitted for:

  • books, continuing publications and printed music from the basic collection in the stacks, except for publications issued before 1946, legal deposit copies (in the catalogue marked with S), reference books, dictionaries and items in poor condition
  • items from the German, Austrian and Swiss Reading Rooms
  • items from the Information Sciences Reading Room

The loan period:

  • books and serials 30 days
  • printed music 3 months
  • items from the German, Austrian and Swiss Reading Rooms

The right to check out books have registered readers from the age of 18.

At any one time users may borrow three (3) books/continuations/ and five (5) printed music pieces.

Items that cannot be borrowed are in the online catalogue ESTER marked with FOR USE IN LIBRARY (KOHALKASUTUS).

Items from the stacks can be ordered to any suitable for the reader reading room or service point (waiting time is 30 min), where they will be hold in the reader’s name for three (3) days. The acceptance of requests for items from the stacks for the same day will be closed one hour before closing the Library. 

There are several options for ordering items and renewing the due date:

      -  printed music muusika at nlib dot ee, tel 630 7141

To read items in high demand, you need to place yourself on a waiting list on the basis of a filled call slip or by e-mail:

  • for books and continuing publications at the Central Circulation Desk on the 5th floor, e-mail tellimispunkt at nlib dot ee
  • for printed music in the Music Reading Room on the 8th floor, e-mail muusika at nlib dot ee 

The due date will not be renewed if

  •  items are in demand
  •  the due date is exceeded

Pursuant to the Rules for Users of the National Library of Estonia the user who fails to return an item in due time will pay a fine of 0,32 € for each delayed day per item. The fine is paid in cash or by a bank card. The damage of loss of items should be reported to the Library by e-mail or phone:

-   printed music muusika at nlib dot ee, tel 630 7141

The lost item must be replaced with the same item. If replacement is not possible the reader has to compensate for the cost of the item.

The borrowed items can be returned to the  Central Circulation Desk, Information and Registration Desk or to the book return box placed in the entrance corridor at Endla 3. The publications can be returned to the book return box from Mon-Sun 7.00-22.00, thus, also at the time when  the Library  is closed to readers.
